For organisations in <a href=\"https:\/\/morson-edge.com\/fr_ca\/secteurs-dactivite\/lenergie\/nucleaire\/\">nucl\u00e9aire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/morson-edge.com\/fr_ca\/secteurs-dactivite\/le-transport\/\">rail<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/morson-edge.com\/fr_ca\/secteurs-dactivite\/laerospatiale-et-la-defense\/\">d\u00e9fense<\/a> and other long\u2011lived assets, the strategic challenge is not \u201cAI or not AI\u201d, but how to design human\u2011AI decision systems that protect judgement, accountability and safety culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-ai-changes-safetycritical-decisions\">Why AI changes safety\u2011critical decisions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI systems shift how information is generated, interpreted and acted on, which directly affects risk in environments where the margin for error is effectively zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Speed and volume of decisions.<\/strong>\u00a0AI can triage alarms, optimise maintenance schedules and support real\u2011time operations, increasing the number and pace of consequential decisions that humans must oversee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opacity of reasoning.<\/strong>\u00a0Many AI tools are probabilistic and non\u2011transparent, making it harder for operators, engineers and safety case specialists to interrogate \u201cwhy\u201d a recommendation is being made.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diffusion of accountability.<\/strong>\u00a0When \u201cthe system\u201d suggested a course of action, lines of responsibility between OEMs, system integrators, operators and regulators can blur if governance is not explicit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Behavioural displacement.<\/strong>\u00a0The more consistently AI appears to work, the more likely people are to over\u2011trust it, under\u2011challenge it or bypass formal process to \u201cget AI into the room\u201d through unofficial channels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In nuclear new build or life\u2011extension projects, for example, AI\u2011supported planning can improve outage efficiency, but the true risk sits in the behaviours it encourages around risk challenge, exception handling and escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"behavioural-risks-cognitive-misers-in-a-digital-co\">Behavioural risks: cognitive misers in a digital control room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have already highlighted how AI can encourage \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/morson-edge.com\/fr_ca\/nouvelles\/ai-cognitif-avare-productivite\/\">cognitive misers<\/a>\u201d \u2013 people who default to mental shortcuts and surface\u2011level thinking when powerful tools do the heavy lifting. In safety\u2011critical environments, this behavioural tendency is not a side\u2011issue; it is itself a hazard.<a href=\"https:\/\/morson-group.com\/news\/ai-cognitive-miser-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>Il n'y a rien \u00e0 traduire de ce que vous avez fourni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key behavioural failure modes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Over\u2011reliance on automation.<\/strong>\u00a0Operators accept AI recommendations as \u201cgood enough\u201d without seeking corroborating evidence, particularly during routine operations or when under time pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Under\u2011reliance and shadow workarounds.<\/strong>\u00a0Where trust is low or tools are poorly embedded, people may ignore AI outputs or build parallel, unofficial tools, creating \u201cshadow systems\u201d that sit outside QA and safety governance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Erosion of skill and vigilance.<\/strong>\u00a0As AI handles more monitoring and analysis, human skills in anomaly detection, fault\u2011finding and scenario thinking can atrophy over time, weakening the last line of defence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Normalisation of deviance.<\/strong>\u00a0If AI repeatedly flags low\u2011level anomalies that never materialise into incidents, teams may start to downplay or silence the tool, normalising risky drift in thresholds and responses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are not purely technical issues; they are expressed through culture, supervision, incentives and how organisations talk about \u201cowning\u201d decisions in the presence of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-behavioural-blueprint-for-ai-in-longlived-assets\">A behavioural blueprint for AI in long\u2011lived assets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Safety\u2011critical sectors with long asset lives \u2013 nuclear, rail, defence, energy \u2013 are used to integrating new technologies into legacy systems under tight regulatory scrutiny. The behavioural disciplines that have underpinned decades of safe delivery need to be re\u2011applied explicitly to AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From our perspective, four behavioural design principles stand out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make accountability visible in human\u2011AI systems<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every AI\u2011supported decision pathway should have a clearly named human decision\u2011owner, with unambiguous authority to accept, reject or escalate AI recommendations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Governance should treat AI as a contributor to the safety case, not as an independent decision\u2011maker; responsibility remains with competent people who understand the system\u2019s limits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design for \u201ceffortful thinking\u201d at the right moments<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In line with our work on cognitive misers, organisations should deliberately engineer \u201cspeed bumps\u201d into high\u2011consequence workflows \u2013 prompts, peer checks or dual\u2011sign\u2011off that require humans to pause and think in depth before acting on AI guidance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical decision support screens should foreground uncertainty, underlying assumptions and alternative scenarios, nudging teams away from blind acceptance of a single \u201cbest\u201d answer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Embed behavioural safety into AI onboarding and training<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Training programmes should go beyond tool operation to explore bias, failure modes and case studies of automation\u2011related incidents in analogous sectors, reinforcing psychological safety to challenge AI outputs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simulation and drills in nuclear operations, rail signalling or defence mission\u2011planning should include \u201cAI is wrong\u201d scenarios, so teams practice override, escalation and cross\u2011checking behaviours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Align AI deployment with existing safety culture \u2013 not around it<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Safety\u2011critical organisations already invest heavily in zero\u2011harm culture, just culture and learning from incidents. AI initiatives should plug into these frameworks, with near\u2011miss reporting that explicitly captures AI\u2011related behaviours and errors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Union representatives, safety reps and frontline supervisors should be involved early, so concerns about de\u2011skilling, surveillance or blame do not undermine engagement or lead to off\u2011system workarounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, successful AI adoption in high\u2011risk environments is a behavioural transformation challenge as much as a data or infrastructure one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-we-help-clients-get-this-right\">How we help clients get this right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We sit at the intersection of AI talent, safety\u2011critical recruitment and long\u2011term programme delivery across nuclear, rail, defence, cyber and energy.
